Types of Genital Warts Treatment 

The presence of warts around the genitals or the anus is truly embarrassing. Although people may not see them, your sex partner certainly will.

Genital warts are the benign tumors that are found on the surfaces near the genital region or on the genitals themselves.

These are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is transmitted through sexual intercourse, including anal and oral sex. They are also referred to as ‘venereal warts’ or in scientific terms ‘condylomata acuminata.’

These warts are usually flat in appearance, but there are types that are rounded and raised.

They also have varied colors, mostly flesh tones, while others are gray.

Some come in small lumps, some in clusters. And if these are left untreated, it will develop into cauliflower-like projection on the skin. Can you imagine a tiny ‘veggie’ growing on your genitals?

Any sexually active individual is susceptible, especially those who have sex with multiple partners indiscriminately.

What’s scarier is that once you get the HPV, which has around 130 types, it stays with you for life, and some HPV types don’t just cause warts but cancer too.

For those who already have genital warts, there are several treatment types available.

The most commonly suggested by doctors is the use of topical solutions. These are ideal for the external protrusions of these warts. Podofilox 0.5% has been proven effective as has wartrol.

This is applied with cotton swab or by the fingers, if it’s in gel form. A cream called Imiquimod 5% can also be applied before bedtime. However, these solutions are not suitable for pregnant women.

Another type of Genital warts treatment is the ‘provider-administered therapy.’ These are basically in the form of solutions that act as caustic agents that destroy the warts through the chemical coagulations of the proteins.

Examples of this type are cryotherapy, using the cryoprobe or liquid nitrogen; the compound tincture of benzoin named Podophyllin resin 10%-25%; as well as the Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) or Bichloroacetic acid (BCA) 80%–90%.

However, these therapeutic solutions are not immediately administered onto the patients without pre-treatment rituals, such as washing the infected area with soap at least 10 hours before treatment.

Medical personnel who specialize on these treatment procedures should be the ones to administer them.

The application of these solutions must be properly done or else the adjacent tissues will only be damaged.

Another treatment type is intralesional interferons. This refers to the treatment of each genital wart, which is usually by injection. However, some people claim that ‘injectables’ are not really effective.

The last type of the treatment is the surgical removal of the warts. It can be done by tangential scissor excision, shave excision, curettage, electrosurgery (electrocautery). Laser surgery can also be used as an alternative to penis pills.

However, bear in mind that the HPV stays in your system. So you’ll have to maintain proper hygiene and observe signs of new wart growths and treat them promptly.
